Restaurant & bars

Restaurant and bars beside Kielder Water

Freshly prepared, cooked from scratch and sourced close to home — two lounge bars, open fires, a garden for summer and a proper pint at the end of it.

Everything we serve is cooked from scratch in our own kitchen, and the blackboard menu changes with the seasons — Northumbrian lamb and beef, game in autumn, fish from the coast, and herbs, vegetables and soft fruit from the cottage gardens.

Lunch is served 12–2 and dinner 6–8, Wednesday to Sunday, with Sunday lunch a fixture for miles around. We’re a small kitchen in a quiet village, so booking a table is always a good idea.

Tables for lunch and dinner are booked by phone — it’s the quickest way to get an answer. For larger parties, walking groups or a special occasion, give us a ring and we’ll sort it out with you.
Locally sourced

From Northumberland, Newcastle and the North East

We buy the best produce we can from local and regional suppliers, so most of the menu travels only as far as Northumberland and the North East. Our own cottage gardens supply fresh herbs, vegetables and soft fruit through the season, and the beer comes from Northumbrian and Border breweries.
Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are always on, and other special diets are no problem at all — let us know when you book and the kitchen will look after you.
Home cooking

Honest, home-cooked food

No fuss and no foams, just generous plates of proper food, cooked the way it always has been at the Pheasant. Think pies with crisp pastry and rich gravy, tender Northumbrian lamb, a Sunday roast with all the trimmings and puddings worth saving room for.

It’s the kind of cooking that brings regulars back week after week, and has walkers planning their route around lunch.

The bars

Oak beams, stone walls and open fires

Two comfortable lounge bars, lovingly restored, each with original beams, exposed stone and a fire lit in winter — the perfect place to settle in with a pint of local ale or a glass of wine. In summer the garden comes into its own, with tables looking out over the Northumberland countryside.
Walkers and cyclists: you can pre-order a packed lunch if you’re out on the Pennine Way or the Lakeside Way for the day — just ask the night before. When you get back, we can wash and dry your kit in our laundry.
